About the plaque

 

Ferns are one of the oldest plants on the planet and cement production is one of the largest contributors to climate change. With this pieceI wanted to explore ecology, climate change, over-development, deforestation, unethical construction and the environmental impact of man-made materials.

 

The first stage of production for the project was to make a custom canvas by making a stretcher and then covering it by hand with canvas, the same as I do when starting a painting. I then made a silicone mould of the canvas. Using that mould I included fern leaves and an embossed version of my artists symbol. This was then filled with cement. Once dried the plaque was removed and cleaned.

The impression in the cement is all that remains of the fern leaves, all organic matter is gone, it is now just cement.

 

But in the cement, the memory of the fern remains.
