About the painting

As the tube was leaving the station I glanced up and saw the buildings above me. In that moment the feeling of travelling underground on the tube and the 'real' world above merged. It was the same feeling I'd had when entering the channel tunnel for the first time, the point where daylight and darkness meet.

The painting uses my signature materials of textured white oil paint and cement powder onto canvas. My process for these paintings is to paint an area in textured white oil paint, followed immediately by the delicate application of cement powder then allowing that area to dry for a few days before moving onto the next area. It's a labour intensive and time-consuming process that delivers unpredictable but unique results.

This is painted onto premium canvas on a hand-made stretcher frame that was made from scratch by me in my studio.
